Homelessness takes on many faces in NYC. Few dispute the need to properly count, monitor, and help NYC’s homeless population. The pathways into homelessness also are varied. A confluence of factors can affect whether someone becomes homeless, including family support, access to emergency shelters and temporary housing, continuity of employment, and education. Additionally, racial and ethnic minorities and children are disproportionately affected by homelessness.
To understand Homelessness as a function of inequality, we used four indicators:
- Race & Homelessness
- Child Homelessness Status & School Attendance
- Age & Homelessness
- Age & Length of Shelter Stay
