Civic Engagement

Feeling invested in a community is what we mean by civic engagement. Living in a NYC neighborhood does not automatically translate into feeling you are part of and building a community. Attending public meetings, turning out to vote, volunteering, and living in a district with participatory budgeting are all key indicators of civic engagement. These indicators are informed by race and income, but also by neighborhood.

To understand Civic Engagement as a function of inequality, we used four indicators:

  • Race & Public Meeting Attendance
  • Income & Voter Turnout
  • Immigration Status & Volunteering
  • Location & Participatory Budgeting
